Hana Fredericks is a British Muslim Sculptor and Art Technician, based in Nottingham. She received her BA Honours in Fine Art at Lancaster University and was awarded the Dean Prize for her Intertwined and Interwoven sculptures in 2018.

Fredericks investigates the notion of the readymade with women in work and labour. She reveals the various ways found objects can be recreated through her sculptures. Moreover, opens a dialogue that explores the dynamic, performative qualities inherent throughout her making process. Her work alludes to craft in relation to technology, labour and activities historically referred to as women’s work and domesticity. Thus, simultaneously attempting to dismantle what people can and cannot do. Therefore, reminding us of today’s constantly developing, innovative and modern working society.

Most of her work includes everyday objects such as chunky wool, curtain hooks, and metal pipes. Her tactile, vibrant wool is hand-dyed in various shades, producing a gradient effect, reminiscent of marble. It is stitched using her continuous loop and knot method and then stretched out on the striking black structure. Contrast is conveyed between the soft fuzzy texture of the wool and the hard, neat industrial surface of the metal. Oblique shapes are formed within her installations by suspending and extending the wool across her arrangement of frameworks, dominating large spaces. The net configuration from the wool is improvised inside the metal structures, letting the interior dictate how it will form as a constituent image. These intertwined materials add tension and a sense of curiosity, allowing spectators to walk around the spacious work and view it from all angles.

Her recent work is her jewellery. Her colourful marble-like wool is modified into her statement earrings as an attempt to expose aspects of the original object. The wool, which has a food colouring, has been embedded within the resin form, transforming it into another structure. This was inspired by her fascination with the readymade and its association with everyday life. Fredericks recreates her sculptural work into this familiar item by reassembling its material attributes into its new form, the earrings.
Fredericks works in Nottingham where she continues to research labour and women in work. Now, she is exploring her own cultural heritage for her curatorial practice to feel more connected to her work.
